# Upgrade a Java project

Move a legacy SHAFT, Selenium, Appium, REST Assured, or Cucumber Maven project onto current modular SHAFT and run one test.

# Upgrade a Java project

For a Maven project that already has tests. The result is that project compiling against current modular SHAFT, with one test run. You need JDK 25, Maven or `mvnw`, and Python 3.9+ as `python`. Commit or stash local edits first.

## Steps

1. From the project root, follow [Run the upgrade](/docs/start/upgrade/run) through the download and the plan prompt. Answer `y` only after you read the plan.
2. Keep the default `basic` type unless you intentionally want Selenium or Appium session code rewritten. The same page owns `session` and `full`.
3. Run one test:

```bash
mvn test
```

 

The check is a compile plus a test count above zero. If Maven reports `Total: 0`, the Surefire provider note on [Install SHAFT](/docs/start/installation) applies.
